A record for Heidi Ulrich and more conditions

26/11/2022

With 2 days to go before the end of the Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia, the conditions on Friday on the speed canal allow the Swiss Heidi Ulrich to finally beat Zara Davis' record from 2017!
Many people are looking forward to the weather forecast for this weekend, a fourth week of attempts that will soon mark the end of the 2022 edition of the Lüderitz Speed Challenge. On a mission, as she has been since the beginning of this competition, the Swiss sailor Heidi Ulrich quickly made a series of runs at the end of the morning on the canal at speeds of between 41 and 43 knots before the speedometer went into overdrive. 46.87 knots, a performance that was quickly followed by 47.16 knots (and almost 50 knots in Vmax!). Subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC), the performance is significant with a new women's record taken by Zara Davis of England and 46.49 knots achieved in 2017 on the same canal.
Highlights of the day included a new personal best for Ireland's Oisin van Gelderen (49.89 knots), Belgium's Vincent Valkenaers taking the lead with 50.98 knots and Dutchman Twan Verseput finishing in the top three with 50.48 knots. Björn Dunkerbeck, who is back in the Canaries to attend an international SUP surfing competition he is co-organising, was the big absentee on this day, which was marked by an optimal window of 'only' 45 minutes before the channel became too choppy.
On Saturday, the weather forecast remains very optimistic with a Lüderitz Speed Challenge 2022 that could well surprise us again...
