A new era for the iQFOiL class

11/12/2024

World Sailing and the iQFOiL class have just announced a major change to the Olympic equipment, planned for January 2025, with the aim of enhancing inclusivity and facilitating the progression of athletes.

Echoing the information we gave you last April (see our article of 19 April 2024), from next year onwards, significant changes will be implemented in the men's and women's categories. Women and young women will move from 8.0 sail to a 7.3. The men, meanwhile, will be using 8.0 sail, previously reserved for women and young people. These adjustments are accompanied by the standardisation of the 490 cm mast for all categories, optimising compatibility with the new sails.

These changes reflect a desire to provide a more level playing field for all athletes, whatever their body shape. By reducing size-related differences, the iQFOiL class aims for a more balanced competition, accessible to a wider range of athletes from different parts of the world. Harmonising the equipment between the youth and senior categories will also simplify the transition for athletes who are making rapid progress, limiting additional costs and reducing the time needed to adapt. After a phase of rigorous testing by iQFOiL class athletes, validated by World Sailing, these new features will be unveiled at the iQFOiL International Games. This event, to be held in Lanzarote from 27 January to 2 February 2025, will mark a major milestone in the evolution of the discipline.
With these changes, the iQFOiL class confirms its ability to innovate while meeting the expectations of athletes and the requirements of Olympic competitions. A new chapter is opening up, promising an even more inclusive and high-performance dynamic.
