A good start for Lemeteyer and Iachino

09/11/2024

The second day of the Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup on Saturday offered a non-stop spectacle with intense racing from morning until night. After five valid eliminations, three for the women and two for the men, Justine Lemeteyer and Matteo Iachino took command of the event.
After a calm start the day before, the wind picked up at 9.15 am on Saturday in Yokosuka, Japan, gusting to 22 knots before gradually easing to 7-10 knots by late afternoon.

In the women's category, Justine Lemeteyer got off to a flying start with second place in the first elimination. But a fourth place in the second elimination allowed Marion Mortefon to temporarily take the lead. Lemeteyer, under pressure, found a second wind after a comforting call to her parents. The result was a clear victory in the third elimination, allowing her to regain the lead. Mortefon remains a serious contender with an excellent performance Saturday, but she will have to hope that Lemeteyer slips up to claim the world title.

On the men's side, Pierre Mortefon wasted no time in making his mark. He won the first elimination after a fierce duel with Daniele Benedetti, then finished fourth in the second race. Thanks to this consistency, he took a 3.3-point lead over Benedetti, who will now have to achieve a clear round if he is to catch up with Mortefon. Matteo Iachino, despite his reduced chances of the world title, bounced back with two second places. Despite an early disqualification, Denmark's Johan Søe showed impressive speed in his victory in the second elimination. Frenchman Cédric Bordes deserves a special mention after battling through pain on Saturday. The victim of an individual fall with his foil, resulting in a nasty gash on his back, he continued to take part in the event and finished twelfth in the two eliminations contested. After the race, Cédric Bordes ended up in hospital with twenty stitches to treat his injury!
With a favourable wind forecast for Sunday, all eyes will be on the next day's racing. Competitors can look forward to a briefing at 8am before taking to the water at 9am.
