A finale in light winds

With you, we continue

The fifth and final day of the iQFOiL International Games in Lanzarote provided a tense scenario right up to the end, dominated by very light winds and long periods of waiting. Dedicated to the Medal Series, this final day put the patience of the athletes and the race committee to the test.

The eight best male and female riders spent most of the morning on shore, with the committee conducting numerous spot checks before finding a navigable area near Playa de Papagayo. The wind, which was light and irregular, fluctuated around 7 knots, making each race decisive and leaving little room for error.
The men's quarter-finals were the first to get underway. In a closely fought race, France's Yun Pouliquen and Adrien Mestre qualified for the semi-finals, eliminating Spain's Nacho Baltasar and Britain's Duncan Monaghan. The women then followed suit with their quarter-finals, with Germany's Theresa Marie Steinlein and Italy's Medea Falcioni qualifying at the expense of Islay Watson and Palma Cargo.

After another wait on the water, the men's semi-finals were contested. Pouliquen and Mestre were once again on form and made it through to the final, notably beating Johan Søe, winner of the 2025 edition, and Olympic medallist Luuc Van Opzeeland. Shortly afterwards, the wind dropped completely, forcing the organisers to cancel the rest of the races. The overall rankings therefore remained unchanged. Finn Hawkins and Emma Wilson took the top spots in the final rankings, ahead of Nicolas Goyard and Sharon Kantor. Yun Pouliquen and Marta Maggetti completed the podium.
Despite a frustrating conclusion in terms of weather, this event confirmed the very high level and versatility of the international iQFOiL circuit.
