3 questions to Takuma Sugi

13/03/2023

As the first event of the year of the brand new PWA IWT Unified Wave Tour kicks off on March 16th in Omaezaki, Japan, we wanted to take the temperature with the local man on the spot, Takuma Sugi. He spoke to Windsurfjournal.com about the benefits of this event for his country, his ambitions and the specifics of the Japanese spot!

Windsurfjournal.com: You are the local of this event in Omaezaki, how does it feel to have a home event with Marcilio Browne, Thomas Traversa or Antoine Martin?
Takuma Sugi: I'm really happy that one of my favourite places in the world will be hosting the tournament. I think it will be a good influence for the future of Japanese windsurfing to have the world's best windsurfers gather and compete.

WJ: How did you prepare for this event and what is your goal?
TS: I'm going for first place. Last year I finished 10th (PWA overall), which was a great result. This year I want to go even higher. Of course, my future goal is to become world champion. Can’t wait for the first event.

WJ: What makes Omaezaki so special and what qualities are required to successfully navigate there?
TS: Omaezaki is a staboard tack, side shore, very difficult and irregular waves at this time of year. The best season is December to March. The average temperature is around 10 degrees Celsius. Snow rarely falls, but the cold wind blows hard. The forecast changes daily, so keep your fingers crossed for good conditions.
