3 questions to Sol Degrieck

21/09/2022

Daughter of Sigrid Rondelez, who represented Belgium three times in windsurfing at the 2000, 2004 and 2012 Olympic Games, Sol Degrieck is the junior revelation of this 2022 season. She had a great performance in Pozo last July, beating Lina Erpenstien on a regular basis, and last week she also made a name for herself in Denmark at the Cold Hawaii PWA Youth Windsurf World Cup. And logically, Windsurfjournal.com had to interview her!

Windsurfjournal.com: Could you first introduce yourself and tell us how you discovered windsurfing?
Sol Degrieck: I am Sol. I'm 12 years old. I'm from Belgium. I have green eyes and long arms. My passion is windsurfing. Living by the sea I discovered windsurfing through my mum.

WJ: 12 is a very young age to start competing... Is it your mother's genes or did you want to compete with others?
SD: I was in and around the salty water since I was a baby. I love windsurfing most, you can do all sorts of jumps even double jumps, waveriding is so much fun. It's like you are playing with waves and wind. Sharing that game with windsurfing friends is wonderful.

WJ: You have done well in the last few weeks, making your mark in Pozo and taking 3rd place in the U20s at the Cold Hawaii PWA Youth Windsurf World Cup. What does this inspire you and what do you want to do in the future?
SD: Thank you. Sailing with champions inspires me to go higher and faster. In the future I'd love to windsurf a lot, I like learning new things and riding bigger waves. I'd love to be a worldchampion one day.
