Among the many rider/sponsor transfers at the beginning of this year, Josh Angulo’s move has really struck a chord, and for at least two very good reasons…For one, he’s quit Ezzy Sails, his long-standing sponsor, for Maui Sails, plus, because the Americo-Cape Verdian has just announced that he’s also targeting another discipline (along with waves) that’s surprised everyone, slalom !!! Here’s the exclusive WJ Angulo interview where CV-1 tells us why, at 33 years young, he’s got a new lease of life !!!

Windsurfjournal.com : Why did you decide to leave Ezzy Sails ? Josh Angulo : I had many good years with the Ezzy company and I left on good terms. It simply came to the point in life and in windsurfing , it was time to move on… WJ : Why did you choose Maui Sails ? JA : Maui Sails chose me and I chose them because the timing was right and we both have a mutual belief in each other´s strengths, talents and possibilities WJ : Is this the most exciting project of your career and why ? JA : This is extremely exciting as I will have a chance to be a lead member of a top windsurf company and receive the type of support necessary at the high end of our support. To be able to have the chance to go compete slalom with the backup of Barry Spanier and Phil McGain is going to be extremely exciting and especially to be able to have real input into the development of the wavesails. It’s is going to be the first time that I´ve really been given this opportunity. The most exciting however is that Maui Sails and myself see eye to eye on the importance of every customer and we will make a great effort to meet with the public in person around the world as well as through the internet forum on the Maui Sails webpage. WJ : After seeing you last year in Fuerteventura slaloming on Micah Buzianis’ rig, will we have a chance to see you racing slalom this year ? JA : I will be competing on the full slalom tour this year. I have tried the new TR-4´s and they are unbelievable. I honestly don´t have much experience in the last year´s besides sailing on Micah´s gear in Fuerte last year, but I can definitely tell right away that everything is correct with the TR-4´s. Getting on those sails gave me a renewed confidence that I have the possibility to e extremely competitive in slalom.
WJ : Do you plan to work on R&D with Maui Sails ? JA : I plan to work intensely with Maui Sails on R&S both in Hawaii and Cabo Verde as well as anywhere else in the world we are windsurfing. Maui Sails has put in some really hard work in the last few years and I am extremely blessed to be coming in at a time where they have great momentum and the full line of equipment. Manufacturing and delivery is 100% dialled in.WJ : What are your plans and program for this season ? JA : First thing is to go to Hawaii this week to pick up sails and new boards for the Cape Verde event and then come to CV to make sure everything is organized well for the event. After that I should be getting some serious slalom sailing and wavesailing training for the rest of the tour. I also plan to attend the Defi Wind for the first time.
