What do the stars think of Slalom 63 ?
08-02-2008
The news slipped out just a few days ago, that in 2009 slalomers on the PWA World Tour must select a quiver of 6 sails and 3 boards for the whole season that they can choose from for each event !!! A big shake up of a top level competition, we went and got the opinions of the top 4 in the 2007 championship about a change that is sure to be a hot topic of conversation throughout this season !!!

Antoine Albeau - 1st PWA Slalom 42 2007
"I can’t believe how we’ve coped with Slalom42 and choosing gear for competitions that last 9 days and where you often found you’d made a wrong choice !!! Now we have to register a quiver for the whole year’s worth of competitions, it’s unbelievable. Still, it’ll make it even easier to find an excuse for bad results. And as regards the equipment to register, I don’t know if you know of a good website with an accurate 6 month forecast, but if you do can you let me know !!!"

Kevin Pritchard - 2nd PWA Slalom 42 2007
"I don’t really care too much about it. For me I think the 42 rule was just fine. I think for the person coming into the sport it looks easier to have only 42. Plus people are just starting to figure out what the 42 is all about and now we are going to change it. I was always for the less is best rule. I still think that the people who are going to win are going to win no matter what the rules are. This year it will be 42. So for most events I will take 9.0, 8.2, 7.6 and 6.7 Gaastra Vapor with the 122 and 101 Starboard iSonic."

Björn Dunkerbeck - 3rd PWA Slalom 42 2007
"I think that for Gran Canaria event one smaller board and one smaller sail would be good to make windsurfing look better for TV and also be more fun !!! And other strong wind areas, to cover 8 to 45 knots with 42 or 63 is always going to be impossible, maybe another rule like minimum 10 knots, maximum 30 knots would help to minimize the luck factor. I just want to remember that the wind can be stronger than we have had it in the last couple of years… In the end the sportive side is as important as to make it look good, and being fun as in funboarding !!! Don’t forget that we promote windsurfing all over, and no one wants to do something that looks like hard work and shitty, and it often does look shitty when everyone is on big equipment. So I think 42 or 63 will be little difference in the end, if we sail on big stuff windsurfing will look bad, and the risk of registering a small board and sail is too big, so most will sign up big stuff and that will in the end mostly look bad in my eyes… Windsurfing should be fun and the rules these days are making it hard to be on the right stuff in the right wind ! What is really good to see is that speed, long distance and slalom is back strong and grooving stronger every day, which really shows how much fun windsurfing is !"

Micah Buzianis - 4th PWA Slalom 42 2007
"I like the idea of having 6/3 for the whole year, it will make travelling much easier for the year. Now we won't have to take so much equipment around to every event. I personally would like to have it open with boards and sails so we are pushing the limits all the time with equipment development but I know this is not realistic for the current windsurfing market. If I had to choose 6/3 for this season I would take the JP Slalom IV 84, 104 and 114 boards and for sails it would be hard because I would need a 5.4 for only one event Gran Canaria but to leave out another size would be hard for all the other events, I would probably go for 9.0, 8.4, 7.8, 7.2, 6.7 and 6.2 and just risk it for Gran Canaria because all these sizes are so important for all the other events on the tour."
